OUR BUSY SUMMER

May 21, 2012

Spokane’s Lilac Bloomsday – May 6, 2012

Jim and Joel enjoyed beautiful weather for the 12 K (7.6 mile) fun run in Spokane. Joel was training for his climb of Mt. Hood later in May. Jim was just trying to prove he could finish!  With a time of 1 hour 40 minutes, he was able to cross the finish line only five minutes behind Joel. A great time was had by all the runners, but we really missed our friends, the Andersons and the Buckaloos this year.

Joel Climbs Mt. Hood – May 17

With his friend from California, Joel and James Garrigus reserved a guide and several nights at Timberline Lodge, and prepared for an assault on Mt. Hood. Waking up at 1:30 am on May 17th, they began the trek up the mountain. A large crevasse prevented their ascent on one route, so they climbed the Old Chute to reach the summit ridge and made it to the top 11,240′, around 7 am just after sunrise. The descent took about four hours to get back to the Lodge. It was a thrilling and inspiring adventure! The complete story and photos can be viewed on Joel’s website. joelbornzin.wordpress.com.

Jim’s Preaching Schedule

Apparently, Jim’s reputation is growing…at least his preaching schedule is! I’ve been asked to “supply” for quite a few Sundays this summer. Pastor Scott Summers has accepted a call to Arlington, WA, so Jim will lead worship at Immanuel, Woodburn, May 13 – June 3.  June 24th, July 1, 15 and 22, I will be preaching at our home congregation, Immanuel, Silverton. www.immanuel-lutheran.church.com.  During August, I will lead worship at Zoar Lutheran in Canby, OR, possibly all four Sundays. And in September I will be at Trinity in Silverton, Sept. 9th, and back to preach at Immanuel Sept. 16 and 23.  Whew!  I said to one friend that I am enjoying the hectic back-to-work schedule, but by Sunday afternoons, I remember why I retired.

Beach Time at Tierra del Mar – June 15-22

Carmen and I are looking forward to spending some time on the Oregon coast in June. We’ve invited Keith and Joel to join us for the weekend of June 16-17. It is always refreshing to walk the beach, watch the breakers, hike the dune, read a good book, and go to bed early with no TV or phone to interrupt the solitude.  We certainly wish you and your loved ones some relaxing times as well.
